Here are some pictures I took of Selhurst Park on Tuesday 1st November before the Championship game against Pompey which kicked-off at 8PM.
I drove from Havant up the A3 to New Malden and caught the train to Clapham Junction before changing to pick up the train to Selhurst. It's a pretty convenient and easy way of getting there. The stadium is a short walk from Selhurst station.
Selhurst Park is an older stadium that has seen much refurbishment in recent times in particular the modern stands behind either goal. The Holmesdale Road Stand in particular is quite an impressive structure and the fans in that stand do make some noise.
There is a Sainsburys supermarket at the Whitehorse Lane end of the ground.
The ground is situated in amongst housing.
Away fans are located in the Arthur Wait Stand and although it's seen better days (some of the wooden seats look a bit tatty for example) when you get 1300 plus Pompey fans inside it (as happened for this match) the noise created is pretty impressive. I watched Pompey play Wimbledon from this stand back in the 2002-03 promotion season when Pompey made up the vast majority of a 9,000 crowd!
I hope you enjoy the pictures.
The Holmesdale Road Stand taken from the bottom of Holmesdale Road. This road was closed to traffic with stewards at the bottom to allow in drivers with passes.
When I first went to Selhurst Park in May 1987 this was terracing, there was probably 10,000 Pompey fans there that day hoping to see promotion to the top flight secured. We lost 1-0 in the dying minutes (boo). But got promoted the next day when Shrewsbury beat Oldham Athletic (hurrah).
Another image of the Holmesdale Road Stand, taken from the side. It's quite a startling image lit up against the night sky.
The Pompey team bus parked in the car park outside The Main Stand.
Crystal Palace art work I came across this when walking along The Main Stand. It's excellent.
Fans wall of bricks. Nicely done. I've seen these sort of things now at quite a few grounds. I've concluded that I like the ones that have the bricks on or in a wall rather than on the ground.
Centenary banners.
Welcome.
A view of the ground from just beyond the corner of Park Road and Whitehorse Lane. Can you see the moon? "Hello moon".
Away supporters' turnstiles in The Arthur Wait Stand on Park Road. There is a tall brick wall all along the Arthur Wait Stand.
And now we're back at the top of Holmesdale Road looking down the hill.
