01/12/2012 - The Hatvent Calendar Is Back!

WHAT IS THE HATVENT CALENDAR?
This is the third year of PompeyChicken's Hatvent Calendar! It's a bit like an online Advent Calendar.

It's been inspired by the Innocent Drinks company who have been putting little woolen hats on their bottles of smoothies as part of The Big Knit, in aid of the charity Age UK.

You may have seen them on sale in Sainsbury's. PompeyChicken's family has been drinking a lot of smoothies again this year and each hat continues to be a perfect fit!

Two year's ago the Hatvent Calendar made connections between each hat and Pompey.

Last year underneath each hat PompeyChicken unveiled a favourite Pompey video clip.

This year he's been looking through the bookshelves to identify some of his favourite football books. Quite a few have a link to Pompey but not all.

You can read more about the Big Knit, which has been running since 2003, by clicking on the link at the end of this blog.

I hope you enjoy this year's Hatvent Calendar.

TODAY'S BOOK

This book is The Cradle Of The Game England & Scotland Wales & Ireland by Stuart Roy Clarke published in 2010 by SRC Books, England.

Stuart is undoubtedly the best football photographer in the UK and this book is full of some absolutely fantastic photographs from every level of the game.

If you are a regular reader of this blog and you sometimes wonder why I take so many pictures of football grounds and their surroundings on Pompey away days then here's my inspiration!

Although I couldn't possibly get anywhere near his standard in a million years his pictures always make me seek out something unique or special at every ground. If you look hard enough you'll never be let down, there will always be something, however small, that will make it worth your while.

On preparing this entry in the Hatvent Calendar I re-read Stuart's introduction to the book put together as he says at a time when "...the threat [to football] would be expressed in financial & ownership issues...".

He goes on to say "...The fans response meanwhile is to seize the day and seize the club: we won't wait on a knight in shining armour to come save the club in the hour of need. It shouldn't come to this. And it won't again...".

In light of where we are at Portsmouth FC and The Pompey Trust what better way than to start the Hatvent Calendar 2012 with this book.
