04/09/2012 Portsmouth 2-2 AFC Bournemouth (Pompey win 4-3 on penalties)

The match programme, this was Pompey's first ever appearance in this competition.
Notes
Pompey beat AFC Bournemouth in a penalty shoot out to progress to the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy (Southern/South West section of the draw).

The game was settled by penalties after ending level at full time with both teams sharing four goals. Pompey twice had to come from behind.

Pompey's first goal came on the stroke of half-time when Luke Rodgers got ahead of his marker to steer home an excellent cross from the right hand side by Mustapha Dumbuya. Dumbuya had received a pinpoint, cross-field pass from Brian Howard on the left before running down the touchline and whipping in his cross.

Brian Howard scored Pompey's second goal with a stunning left footed strike from outside of the penalty area which he placed with accuracy to the right of the diving Jalal in the Cherries' goal.

The victory was tough on AFC Bournemouth who looked the stronger team on the night. However, if they'd taken the many chances presented to them in normal time the outcome would have been very different. As it was Macdonald, going for a hat-trick, Fogden and Barnard all spurned excellent chances.
