HATVENT CALENDAR 13/12/2010

This is another hat where I thought I was going to struggle to find an associated football club. It's blue, with green flecks in it and a rather odd looking brown stalk - which looks totally out of place.

But I was wrong! I found one! Coventry City had a second strip in brown! It's quite well known if truth be told and goes down in history as one of the worst strips ever (in some people's eyes anyway).

See here for more information ==> http://www.premiershirts.net/wearthat/wearthatshirts/cov.jpg it looks completely wrong!

In fact looking a bit harder I found more than one brown strip! Tottenham Hotspur and Paris St Germain also had a brown second strips in recent times.

Furthermore, Coventry liked brown so much they brought it back 'in celebration' see here ==> http://www.retrofootballshirts.co.uk/blog-3-coventry-city-retro-shirt.htm and here ==> http://www.football-shirts.co.uk/fans/coventry-city-to-wear-brown-against-watford_3397

Anyway, this out-of-place 'brown stalk' and Coventry City's brown strip got me thinking about things which just don't seem right or work out as expected.

Or in the case of footballers, players who join clubs with high hopes and expectations but find themselves as 'outcasts' or 'misfits', often through no fault of their own. They were just there at the wrong time e.g. the manager changed as they joined, they got injured or the club was struggling.

Here's a list of Pompey players (and one or two managers as well for good measure) from recent times who fall into that category in my view - they just didn't seem to fit in:

Alain Perrin see here for information on this French manager, relatively successful in his homeland, in charge of Pompey for less than a year ==> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alain_Perrin

Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi see here for more information on this Japanese goalkeeper, an idol in his homeland but despite lots of good rapport with the fans never a success at Fratton Park ==>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoshikatsu_Kawaguchi

Lee Chapman arrived at and left Fratton Park very quickly playing just five times, scoring a couple of goals and getting himself sent-off. You can see more about Lee Chapman here ==> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Chapman

Craig Foster and his Australian compatriates (i.e. Robbie Enes, Hamilton Thorp and Paul Harries) who joined Pompey in the Terry Venables era, along with a 5th Aussie John Aloisi who was relatively successful. To be fair to Craig he was probably, Aloisi aside, the best of a bad bunch. See here for more information ==> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Foster

Ian Stewart an Irish international, signed on a free transfer by Alan Ball, who made a single substitute appearance for Pompey during the 1987-88 season.

Paul Sugrue signed on a free transfer by Alan Ball, played just four times for Pompey between 1984 and 1986 before moving on to Northampton Town where he made eight appearances. See here for more information ==> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Sugrue

Micky Hazard another player who arrived at and left Fratton Park very quickly. He performed very well in his first few appearances for Pompey, fell out with the manager (Frank Burrows) and moved to Swindon, netting Pompey a profit. See here for more information ==> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micky_Hazard

Carl Griffiths scored lots of goals at Shrewsbury Town before coming to Pompey and Leyton Orient after leaving them but was never really given a chance at Fratton Park making just 14 appearances. See here for more information ==> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Griffiths

Theofanis Gekas who came on as a sub during his loan spell in 2009-10 for one minute of added time. See here for more on this Greek international ==> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theofanis_Gekas

Nicos Kyzerides played six times for Pompey in the 1998-99 season without scoring. Despite showing skill and energy he didn't settle and returned to Greece after just four months.

Azar Karadas see here for more information on this Turkish / Norwegian who came to Pompey on loan from Benfica and scored one goal ==> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azar_Karadas

Ian Baird quite a surprise when he joined Pompey (to me anyway) as he'd always got plenty of stick from the Pompey fans for his connections with Southampton when playing at Fratton Park, leading to his sending off on at least one occasion as he seemingly got more and more frustrated. He scored once in twenty appearances before returning whence he came (Leeds United). See here for more information ==> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ian_Baird

Mladen Rudonja see here for more information on this Slovenian international who played 14 times for Pompey ==>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mladen_Rudonja

Velimir Zajec see here for more information on this Croatian Director of Football / Caretaker Manager at Pompey ==> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velimir_Zajec

Rory Allen a sad story to end with. Rory Allen played for Pompey just 15 times scoring three goals between 1999 and 2002 but after suffering a number of injuries and enduring a number of operations he retired from the game and famously went off to Australia to watch England play in The Ashes.
