From Falmouth To Wembley: Time To Catch Up! The baton is passed from Maidenhead United to Aldershot Town and to Sheffield Wednesday.
It's time to catch up with my look at the 2011-12 FA Cup competition with the latest match summaries from the First and Second rounds proper.
Those of you who have been following this from the start will know that back in the Summer I started to follow this season's FA Cup with Falmouth Town (still the only team from Cornwall ever to progress to the First Round proper of the FA Cup).
The baton was passed from Falmouth Town AFC to Bodmin Town to Godalming Town and we pick up the story with Maidenhead United.
The simple notion here is that eventually one club will get to Wembley and you'll be able to look right back to the start of the Competition to see where it all started.
You can see links to the match reports from the previous rounds at the end of this article.
As the games have got bigger video footage has become more readily available with highlights available of all three of the latest games in the Falmouth to Wembley chain.
FA Cup First Round
Saturday 12th November 2011
Maidenhead United 1-1 Aldershot Town
Uploaded on YouTube by thefacup on 13 Nov 2011
Goalscorers: Anthony Thomas (on 7 minutes) for Maidenhead and second half substitute Michael Rankine (on 78 minutes) equalised for the visitors.
Match played at: York Road
Attendance: 2,248
Maidenhead United team: Sam Beasant, Leigh Henry, Leon Solomon, Bobby Behzadi, John Scarborough, Martel Powell, Will Hendry (Andrew Fagan, 64), Daniel Brown, Reece Tison-Lascaris (Manny Williams, 59), Ashan Holgate, Anthony Thomas (Alex Wall, 80)
Aldershot Town team: Jamie Young, Aaron Brown, Anthony Straker, Peter Vincenti (Michael Rankine, 46), Ben Herd, Darren Jones, Jamie Collins, Jermaine McGlashan (Bradley Bubb, 75), Luke Guttridge, Scott Davies (Alex Rodman, 46), Danny Hylton
Dean Holdsworth (Aldershot Town manager) was quoted after the match saying: “This was always a potential banana skin and you never want to be that victim. Non-league football is all about big hearts and desire and Maidenhead showed that. We've had to work for our result. We knew Maidenhead would frustrate us and get 10 men behind the ball, and that's what they did. We had to earn the right to be in the hat and in the end it was a great response from the two subs at half time. We’ll bring them back to our place and I think it works out well for Maidenhead and I think they were pleased with that."
Interesting facts: York Road, the home of Maidenhead United, hosted one of the first FA Cup ties 140 years ago in 1872. Maidenhead United are managed by former Aldershot striker Johnson Hippolyte.

Aldershot Town team: Jamie Young, Ben Herd, Darren Jones, Aaron Morris, Anthony Straker, Alex Rodman, Scott Davies, Jamie Collins, Jermaine McGlashan (Adam Mekki, 65), Luke Guttridge (Peter Vincenti, 82), Michael Rankine (Danny Hylton, 65)
Next up in the FA Cup for Aldershot Town: Sheffield Wednesday (away)
Ben Herd (Aldershot Town captain) was quoted as saying after the match: "It's never easy against a Non-League team, you’re on a hiding to nothing because you are expected to win. The early goal settled the nerves, they dropped off and the difference between full-time and part-time football showed in the end. We made them work to get the ball, a bit like Manchester United did to us, we picked them off at times. It’s a bit mundane at time but we kept the ball well and bossed the game from start to finish, and never really felt in any danger of losing them game or letting them back into it. It was a job well done.”
Interesting fact: The Recreation Ground is currently known as the EBB Stadium.

Next up in the FA Cup for Sheffield Wednesday: West Ham United (home) on Sunday January 8th, kick-off 3PM.
Dean Holdsworth (Aldershot Town manager) was quoted after the match saying: “We've been on a long journey and we always said it would come down to defining moments in a game. We've worked very hard and got ourselves into the position to win the game and in the end it's a lapse in concentration and a moment of real quality which has cost us. I can't fault the players, they gave everything. I thought they were excellent in the first half and in the second half we gave it a real go. In the end, two saves by their keeper from Adam Smith and Jermaine [McGlashan] showed the fine line. We're just getting punished for losses in concentration at the moment.”
Interesting fact: Hillsborough is the 10th largest domestic stadium in the country.

24/12/2011 HATVENT CALENDAR: KING KANU'S GOAL IN THE 2008 FA CUP FINAL!
POMPEYCHICKEN'S HAT OF THE DAY
It's another hat with a chocolate flake on it today! Yum!
TODAY'S POMPEY VIDEO
Something a bit different today and yet oh, so familiar!
It's King Kanu's winning goal in the 2008 FA Cup Final...with a foreign commentator. I'm not sure which language this is, possibly Hungarian, but to be frank who cares!
The whipped in cross by John Utaka the mistake by the 'keeper Peter Enckelman, King Kanu's reaction to put the loose ball in the back of the net and the Kanu-Muntari dance are all still the same!
Two Nigerians, a Finn and a Ghanaian in the key moment from English football's showpiece final commentated on by someone from a completely different country alltogether. It really is the global game.
Enjoy!

23/12/2011 HATVENT CALENDAR: VICTORY AT OLD TRAFFORD!
POMPEYCHICKEN'S HAT OF THE DAY
Christmas is almost here and this hat looks a bit like a trifle, the sort we used to have at Christmas when we were kids. Lots of sponge cake, fruit, jelly, creamy custard topping and a sprinkling of hundreds and thousands. I'd like to think that someone is going to have trifle this Christmas - let me know if you do!
TODAY'S POMPEY VIDEO
From the moment Lassana Diarra body-checked Christiano Ronaldo out of play in the very first minute of the game you just knew something special was unfolding.
Although there was still a Semi-Final and the Final to come many Pompey fans will point to this victory at Old Trafford, the first since the late 1950s, as the day Pompey 'won' the FA Cup. No disrespect to either WBA or Cardiff City but as the only Premier League team left in the Cup Pompey made themselves favourites with this 1-0 win.
As you can see from the action presented here Manchester United had plenty of opportunities to win the game. Who could forget Sylvain Distin's last ditch save on the goal line? Or Glenn Johnson's header when he was the only defender to beat?
The bloke in front of me, turned away as Sulley Muntari stepped up insisting he couldn't watch. I pointed him back at the action telling him he had to: this was history being made! As the ball nestled in the back of the net he turned around and gave me a big kiss on the forehead! LOL!

22/12/2011 HATVENT CALENDAR: HEY! GET IN THERE BOYS!
POMPEYCHICKEN'S HAT OF THE DAY
A blue hat with three bobbles on it to represent the three valuable points Pompey collected at The JJB Stadium against Wigan Athletic to secure safety from relegation back in 2006. Seems like only yesterday.
TODAY'S POMPEY VIDEO
This was the culmination of The Great Escape, the match against Wigan had been won and it was time for the Pompey players and staff to celebrate in front of the travelling faithful. Everyone had been through so much and the impossible had happened with a game to spare. You can see from these images what it meant to all involved both on and off the pitch.
Look out for Arjan De Zeeuw, Toddy with his shout of "Hey! Get in there boys!", the players singing "Play Up Pompey!" as they emerge from the tunnel and the roar of the Pompey fans as they greet their heroes.
It was a long old trip up to Wigan and back but boy what a great day!

21/12/2011 HATVENT CALENDAR: THE GREAT ESCAPE IS ON!
POMPEYCHICKEN'S HAT OF THE DAY
Today's hat is blue with a small flower on top, the first signs of Spring, the first signs of a new beginning and the start of Pompey's Great Escape from relegation in the 2005-06 season.
Without a win in eight games and with the score at one-one up pops Pedro Mendes to fire in his second pile driver of the match with virtually the final kick of the match to send the Fratton fans beserk. I recall swinging in joy like some demented idiot from a rusty old girder at the back of the South Stand, only to find my hand covered in blood with a cut!
Sam Matterface's radio commentary on Quay Radio has almost become as legendary as the goal itself. Enjoy these 36 seconds of utter brilliance.

20/12/2011 HATVENT CALENDAR: SO NEAR AND YET SO FAR
POMPEYCHICKEN'S HAT OF THE DAY
A red hat with a green leaf on top...the green leaf of hope. The red represents Liverpool, Pompey's opponents in the 1992 FA Cup Semi-Final.
Before 2008 this was as close as Pompey had come to an FA Cup Final since 1949 when they lost 3-1 to Leicester City having gone into the game as clear favourites against their Division Two opponents.
For 8 minutes during Extra Time in this match Pompey were going to Wembley following Darren Anderton's goal. Unfortunately, Liverpool equalised with 4 minutes left.
The tie went to a replay at Villa Park and Pompey lost on penalties after the game ended 0-0. No second replays because of the General Election and the pressures on Police time.
So close and yet so far.
Pompey would have had a great chance to win the FA Cup in 1992 - the winners of the other Semi-Final against Norwich City were fellow Division Two team Sunderland.
As it was Liverpool went on the lift yet another trophy and Pompey fans had to wait another 16 more years for FA Cup glory.
Today's video has three parts all joined together. The images of the fans, the tickertape, the goal celebrations, the post-match reactions are all great.
I distinctly remember in the week leading up to this match that I took loads of old newspapers and dyed them blue to create carrier bags full of tickertape for me and my mates. The Highbury terraces after the game were covered! I've got a picture somewhere which I must dig out and share.
I really thought we were going to do it that year. It only seems like yesterday...
Enjoy!

19/12/2011 HATVENT CALENDAR: POMPEY TRAFFIC WARDEN!
POMPEYCHICKEN'S HAT OF THE DAY
Today's hat is a bit like the away strip that WBA wore back in 1994 when they visited Fratton Park on the last day of the season needing a win to stay up in the First Division of The Endsleigh League (which they duely delivered). Well, let's put it this way...the green part of the hat is (LOL!). See Bonus Video below for more.
Why the link between today's hat and WBA? Well, today's Pompey Video was taken after the FA Cup Semi-Final at Wembley in 2008 against WBA when one Pompey fan improvises to control the flow of traffic.
It leads to a hilarious 30 seconds, look out for the comedy walks of the two Pompey fans who cross the road one way and then back again and the little jig at the very end.
The camera man and other fans laughing in the background just adds to a classic moment.
Enjoy!

18/12/2011 HATVENT CALENDAR: POMPEY FANS ON FORM AS USUAL!
POMPEYCHICKEN'S HAT OF THE DAY
It's a hat with a flake on it today.
Why? Well, the work 'flake' rhymes with 'shake' (LOL!) which is what Fratton Park did during this game as the Pompey fans cranked up the volume to levels not heard for quite some time with a stirring, repeating rendition of 'Tony Adams' Blue And White Army!'.
Today's video and commentary, from the Channel Five coverage, catches the moment perfectly. On the day of the South Coast Derby against Saints let's hope we see the same levels of noise and passion today!
Enjoy the video to get in the mood and have an enjoyable afternoon! PUP!

Portsmouth team versus AC Milan: David James, Glenn Johnson, Younes Kaboul, Sylvain Distin, Nadir Belhadj, Glenn Little (replaced by Arnold Mvuemba on 66 minutes), Papa Bouba Diop, Richard Hughes, Armand Traore, Peter Crouch, King Kanu (replaced by Sean Davis on 81 minutes). Substitutes not used: Jamie Ashdown, Hermann Hreidarsson, Noe Pamarot and Marc Wilson.
Attendance: 20,403
FT: Portsmouth 2-2 AC Milan
Pompey goalscorers: Younes Kaboul on 62 minutes and King Kanu on 73 minutes. At 2-0 Pompey fans were in Heaven, but a fantastic free-kick by Ronaldinhio and an added time toe-poke equaliser by Italian legend Inzaghi made the final score 2-2. So near and yet so far...nothing will take away the memories of the night though which will last forever. It really was electric.

16/12/2011 HATVENT CALENDAR: DAY OUT AT POMPEY
POMPEYCHICKEN'S HAT OF THE DAY
It's a green hat today as I've heard that is the favourite colour of @MinisterGerry whose excellent video is featured below. All the doors in his house are painted green apparently... ;-D
TODAY'S POMPEY VIDEO
This video records one group of Pompey fans' day out at Fratton Park earlier this season to watch the match against Barnsley.
Look out for the dancing!
The soundtrack to today's video is the classic Rock N Roll Damnation by the one and only AC/DC.
For the record Pompey won the match 2-0 with goals from Norris and Varney.
Enjoy some great music and some great scenes to set you up for the football this weekend.

15/12/2011 HATVENT CALENDAR: POMPEY FAN IN A HAT!
POMPEYCHICKEN'S HAT OF THE DAY
How to stand out from the crowd? Wear an unusual, big hat of course! Today's hat is worn in honour of John Portsmouth Football Club Westwood the subject of today's Pompey video.
This is a short but fascinating insight into Pompey's most recognisable fan. There are some great doses of humour as well from the very start to the very end. It was put together by the University of Chichester's Cultural Studies Department back in 2009.
Enjoy!
TODAY'S POMPEY VIDEO
The 1976 Boxing Day game John references as his first at Fratton Park was won 1-0 with a goal from The Saviour Of The Portsmouth Forward Line: David Kemp!
The crowd was 32,368, not too bad for a Division 3 game!
The Pompey team that day was: Grahame Lloyd, Norman Piper, Keith Viney, Peter Denyer, Steve Foster, Paul Cahill, David Pullar, David Kemp, Chris Kamara, Matt Pollock and Mick Mellows.
The date of the game was 27/12/1976. Pompey were managed by former Liverpool great Ian St. John also of Saint and Greavsie fame.
Brighton, managed by Alan Mullery, were eventually promoted to Division Two along with Mansfield Town and Crystal Palace.

14/12/2011 HATVENT CALENDAR: I DO LIKE TO SEE A GAME OF FOOTBALL
POMPEYCHICKEN'S HAT OF THE DAY
Today's hat looks like it belongs in a different era (well it does to me!). Something Ena Sharples in Coronation Street may have worn!
Today's video (with its backing track from an even earlier era!) includes some amazing colour footage taken on March 24th 1962 at Fratton Park during Pompey's 1961-62 Division 3 Championship winning season.
There's a big crowd, Jimmy Dickinson (number 6) is playing, look out for the Watney's Brown Ale advert on the North Stand and look at the Pompey shirts with the red numbers on the back!
There are some informative comments for the video on YouTube that tells us a bit more abaout the game including the opponents (Bristol City), the scoreline (5-0), the goalscorers (Ron Saunders, Keith Blackburn, Tony Barton, David Dodson (2)) and the attendance (20,584).
The backing track, from the 1930s, is called I Do Like To See A Game Of Football and it's by Sydney Kyte And His Piccadilly Hotel Band.
Although it's from a different era (nearly 50 years ago) there is something very familiar about Fratton Park in this video don't you think?
Enjoy!

13/12/2011 HATVENT CALENDAR: SKYSPORTS FANZONE PNE 0-1 POMPEY
POMPEYCHICKEN'S HAT OF THE DAY
The hat today is as close to a Tommy Cooper style Fez as I can find.
It represents the totally unexpected, perfect moment, when the FA Cup 5th Round tie between Preston North End and Pompey ended in a rather clumsy, haphazard fashion in the final minute.
It was the sort of magic we all knew Tommy could produce, but often didn't opting instead for the comedy angle.
The sort of moment we all hoped Pompey would produce, but rarely did: 'magical moments' and 'Pompey' were words rarely seen together in the same sentence.
But with the game goalless and heading for a Fratton Park replay Pompey had one final corner kick...the rest as they say, with the FA Cup trophy gleaming in the TV Studio overlooking the pitch, is history.
This is how it played out on SkySports Fanzone.
Enjoy!

11/12/2011 HATVENT CALENDAR: BARNSLEY 2-2 PORTSMOUTH
POMPEYCHICKEN'S HAT OF THE DAY
It's got decidedly wintery during the last few days in the UK and to celebrate today's hat is a snowman!
TODAY'S POMPEY VIDEO
Whatever happened to the days of orange footballs and playing on snow? If you're not sure what I mean take a look at today's Pompey video from the mid-1980s!
Oakwell is a very different ground today with modern stands on three sides. Look at the open terracing back in the 1980s that was commonplace then.
Some interesting names in the Pompey line-up for this match (e.g.Francis, Golac, Bamber, McGarvey) and a good few who were in the promotion winning team of the 1986-87 season. See below for details.
Look out for Noel Blake's last minute equaliser!
Enjoy!
Date: 09/02/1985
Competition: Cannon Football League Division Two
Portsmouth team versus Barnsley: Alan Knight, Ivan Golac, Paul Hardyman, Gerry Francis, Noel Blake, Billy Gilbert, Vince Hillaire, Mick Kennedy, Dave Bamber, Kevin O'Callaghan and Scott McGarvey. Substitute: Mick Tait.
Attendance: 7,382
FT: Barnsley 2-2 Portsmouth
Pompey goalscorers: Laws (OG) and Noel Blake in the 90th minute!

08/12/2011 HATVENT CALENDAR: MIDDLESBROUGH 2-4 PORTSMOUTH
POMPEYCHICKEN'S HAT OF THE DAY
Today's hat is red and white with a rather glorious looking bobble.
The red and white honours Middlesbrough, Pompey's opponents in today's video, a classic FA Cup Fifth Round encounter at the old Ayresome Park back in 1992.
The bobble represents Pompey's glorious victory on Teeside.
TODAY'S POMPEY VIDEO
Preamble: Pompey are on a decent FA Cup run and this game follows victories over Exeter City, Leyton Orient and a draw against 'Boro at Fratton Park that led to this replay.
We're beginning to see the emergence of a very good Pompey team under the leadership of The Bald Eagle, with a good combination of experience (e.g. Knight, Neill, Clarke) and some very talented youngsters (e.g. Awford, Symons, Powell and Anderton).
A home quarter final tie against Nottingham Forest awaits the victors. Who knows how far this Pompey team can go?!
Enjoy!
Date: 26/02/1992
Competition: FA Cup 5th Round Replay
Portsmouth team versus Middlesbrough: Alan Knight, Andy Awford, John Beresford, Daryll Powell, Kit Symons, Guy Butters, Warren Neill, Martin Kuhl, Colin Clarke, Chris Burns, Darren Anderton. Substitute used: Warren Aspinall for Chris Burns.
Attendance: 19,479
FT: Middlesbrough 2-4 Portsmouth

POMPEYCHICKEN'S HAT OF THE DAY
The only link between today's hat and the video that follows is that it's a bit tight, just like the record crowd that packed in to Fratton Park to see Pompey take on The Rams (LOL! I'm struggling for links, can you tell?!).
TODAY'S POMPEY VIDEO
This short video shows what 51,385 people looks like in Fratton Park!
Just stop and think for a moment: that's 51,385 people rammed in to a space that is pretty much the same size today as it was then. Unbelievable really.
The last 'big' crowd I was a part of at Fratton Park was the 28,000+ attendance back in 1987 for the final game of the season against Sheffield United. That was a bit 'hairy' at times, the top half of the old Fratton End was closed off for safety reasons, but it was absolutely nothing like this crowd!
In his book 'Portsmouth: Champions Of England 1948-49 & 1949-50', Colin Farmery writes: "...queues for the turnstiles began forming soon after breakfast time. At 2PM the gates were shut...".
There are also some great quotes from someone who attended the match, Mr Lucas from Gosport: "...buses came and went like trains and it appeared just like a conveyor belt moving people to the game...Frogmore Road was absolutely full. We were standing shoulder to shoulder..."
Enjoy this piece of Pompey history!

Portsmouth team versus Derby County: Ernie Butler, Jasper Yeuell, Harry Ferrier, Jimmy Scouler, Reg Flewin, Jimmy Dickinson, Peter Harris, Bert Barlow, Ike Clarke, Len Phillips and Jack Froggatt. Pompey were unchanged from the previous round.

06/12/2011 HATVENT CALENDAR: BRADFORD CITY 1-3 PORTSMOUTH
POMPEYCHICKEN'S HAT OF THE DAY
No real link between today's hat and the video below...other than this is as close a match to Alan Ball's jumper as I could find!
TODAY'S POMPEY VIDEO
This video has some memorable moments: Fred Dineage's introduction of Alan Ball at the start; Alan Ball's comments in his interview with Andy Steggles about the players, the fans and the City of Portsmouth; the travelling Pompey fans at The Valley, Bradford; brief post-match interviews with Andy Awford and Johnny Lager; and Joyce Tynan in great form confirming what we all know.
There's even a cameo Fratton Park appearance by Paul Gascoigne at Paul Walsh's testimonial two days after. Just like the rest of us at the time of course, Steggles didn't know that Gazza wasn't actually going to make England's final squad for the 1998 World Cup Finals in France. But that's a story for another day.
Enjoy this video, I don't mind admitting that listening to Ballie on this video brought a lump to my throat. God I miss him.
It really was a perfect day...
Date: 03/05/1998
Competition: Nationwide League Division One
Portsmouth team versus Bradford City: Aaron Flahaven, Robbie Pethick, Matt Robinson, David Hillier, Dave Waterman, Andy Awford, Michalis Vlachos, Sammy Igoe, Mathias Svensson, John Durnin and Andy Thomson.
Attendance: 15,890 (including 3,000-4,000 Pompey fans, reports vary)
FT: Bradford City 1-3 Portsmouth
Pompey goalscorers: John Durnin (2) and Sammy Igoe

05/12/2011 HATVENT CALENDAR: MANCHESTER UNITED 0-0 PORTSMOUTH
POMPEYCHICKEN'S HAT OF THE DAY
This is a red hat with some sort of 'shield' on the top (well that's what I think anyway).
It's red in honour of Manchester United and the 'shield' (LOL) is a very loose link to day's video.
TODAY'S POMPEY VIDEO
Possibly one of the strongest teams Pompey put out in the modern era failed to really trouble Manchester United in the Community Shield at Wembley.
The game ended 0-0 after 90 minutes (the only positive of the onfield play on the day IMHO), Pompey missed three penalties in the penalty shootout that ensued and Manchester United won the trophy.
But it was another great day out for the Pompey fans of course!
So, what how do you 'celebrate' after a game like that?
Well, here's your answer! Enjoy!
PS - don't try this at home!
Date: 10/12/2008
Competition: Community Shield
Portsmouth team versus Manchester United: David James, Glenn Johnson, Sol Campbell, Sylvain Distin, Hermann Hreidarsson (replaced by Lauren on 79 minutes), Papa Bouba Diop, Pedro Mendes (replaced by Arnold Mvuemba on 75 minutes), Lassana Diarra, Niko Kranjcar (replaced by John Utaka on 60 minutes), Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe. Substitutes Not Used: Jamie Ashdown, Ben Sahar, Martin Cranie and Armand Traore.
Attendance: 84,808
FT: Manchester United 0-0 Portsmouth (Manchester United won 3-1 on penalties)

This video makes me smile everytime I see it, such a shame I wasn't there (sigh).

Can you see yourself?
There are quite a few videos from this Pompey trip abroad posted on YouTube but this is one of the best.
Will we see any more on the Hatvent Calendar? You never know, watch this space!

03/12/2011 HATVENT CALENDAR: COVENTRY CITY 1-2 PORTSMOUTH
POMPEYCHICKEN'S HAT OF THE DAY
Today's hat is sky blue and white in honour of Coventry City who are Pompey's opponent's in today's Championship encounter at Fratton Park as well as being the subject of today's Pompey Video.
TODAY'S POMPEY VIDEO
With Pompey 1-0 down to a first half Leon Best wonderstrike, going in to the 90th minute of normal time, not even the most diehard Pompey fan could have dreamt that they would eventually end up in the FA Cup Final at Wembley!
But as we all know that is exactly what happened.
Stephen Wright's own goal in added time was as unexpected as Pompey's eventual progress to the North London showpiece.
To really rub salt into the Coventry wounds, with the scores level and a penalty shoot out looming, up popped South Africa captain Aaron Mokoena at a corner kick to clinch the tie in the 121st minute. One of his finest moments at the Club (I'd say the other 'standout' was his performance in the FA Cup Semi-Final against Spurs, alongside Ricardo Rocha).
This match was typical of the 'never say die' attitude that the Pompey squad of the 2009-10 season demonstrated against the ever deepening gloom off the pitch.
I wasn't at The Ricoh Arena that evening but I do remember watching on TV and bouncing around the room like a complete idiot, punching the air with a 'GET IN THERE!!!' exclamation when Mokoena's header hit the back of the net!
Ah, the joys of the FA Cup!
With the Third Round draw coming up this Sunday afternoon, let's hope that signals the start of another famous Pompey cup run. We can but hope! Enjoy!
Date: 12/01/2010
Competition: FA Cup 3rd Round (replay)
Portsmouth team versus Coventry City: Asmir Begovic, Anthony Vanden Borre, Aaron Mokoena, Marc Wilson, Hermann Hreidarsson, Papa Bouba Diop, Hayden Mullins, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Michael Brown, Frederic Piquionne, Tommy Smith. Substitutes: Danny Webber, Jamie Ashdown, Mike Williamson, John Utaka, Leonard Sowah and Angelos Basinas.
Attendance: there were 7,097 at The Ricoh Arena on a cold and icy January evening (487 away fans made the trip)
Pompey goalscorers: Stephen Wright (OG) and Aaron Mokoena
FT: Coventry City 1-1 Portsmouth (Pompey won 1-2 AET)

02/12/2011 HATVENT CALENDAR: POMPEY 3-2 NEWPORT COUNTY
POMPEYCHICKEN'S HAT OF THE DAY
A plain orange hat today in honour of Newport County who feature in today's video.
TODAY'S POMPEY VIDEO
Click on the image below to view the video which is from a classic FA Cup tie at Fratton Park in 1949.
As with the match in the previous round against Sheffield Wednesday, the Pompey fans turned out in great numbers and on this occasion were joined by quite a few travelling fans from South Wales.
Newport County, of Division Three (South) were Cup Giant Killers having beaten Leeds United (then in Division Two) and Huddersfield Town (then in Division One) in the two previous rounds. The latter victory came after a replay.
On this occasion there would be no replay as Extra Time had been agreed before the start of the game should it be necessary - a canny move by Pompey with hindsight!
Look out for Bert Barlow's terrible penalty, surely one to rival Kevin Prince Boateng's miss in the 2010 FA Cup Final!
There are some fabulous pictures here not only of the match action but of the fans from both teams as well. What a great sight Fratton Park really was in those days jam packed to the rafters. Enjoy!
Date: 12th February 1949
Competition: FA Cup 5th Round 1948-49 season
Portsmouth team versus Newport County: Ernie Butler, Jasper Yeuell, Harry Ferrier, Jimmy Scouler, Reg Flewin, Jimmy Dickinson, Peter Harris, Bert Barlow, Ike Clarke, Len Phillips and Jack Froggatt
Attendance: 48,581. This was a record attendance at the time and remains Pompey's fifth highest attendance of all time at Fratton Park.
Pompey goalscorers: Phillps (2) and Froggatt
FT: Portsmouth 2-2 Newport County (Pompey won 3-2 AET).

01/12/2011 HATVENT CALENDAR: POMPEY 2-1 OXFORD UNITED
WHAT IS THE HATVENT CALENDAR?
This is the second year of PompeyChicken's Hatvent Calendar! It's a bit like an online Advent Calendar.
It's been inspired by the Innocent Drinks company who have been putting little woolen hats on their bottles of smoothies as part of The Big Knit, in aid of the charity Age UK.
You may have seen them on sale in Sainsbury's or Boots. PompeyChicken's family has been drinking a lot of smoothies recently! Each hat seems to fit perfectly!
Last year's Hatvent Calendar made connections between each hat and Pompey.
Underneath each new hat this year, PompeyChicken will unveil a favourite Pompey video clip. There will be one hat per day in the lead-up to Christmas.
You can read more about the Big Knit, which has been running since 2003, by clicking on the link at the end of this blog.
Enjoy!
POMPEYCHICKEN'S HAT OF THE DAY
TODAY'S POMPEY VIDEO
To start us off, here is a classic piece of Fratton Park action from 22nd December 1984 between Pompey and Oxford United.
The Pompey team that day was: Alan Knight, Gary Stanley, Mick Tait, Kevin Dillon, Noel Blake, Malcolm Waldron, Neil Webb, Micky Kennedy, Nicky Morgan, Alan Biley and Vince Hillaire.
The crowd was 22,446.
Colin Farmery in his book From Tindall To Ball A Complete Record (1999) writes about this match as follows: Going into injury-time against league leaders Oxford three days before Christmas, Pompey were a goal down. In 120 glorious seconds, added on for a pitch invasion by Santa Claus, Biley buried two headers and secured an improbable victory amid scenes of delirium.
Click on the image below to view the video and look out for some great scenes including: the masses of fans standing on the terraces, the mud in the Milton End goalmouth and the advertising hoarding for Bobby Tambling Sports!
Martin Tyler is the commentator. The video has been viewed quite a few times and people have made some very good comments which are well worth reading too. Great memories from the 1980s!
Video originally posted on YouTube by: PETE1201

LET'S NOT FORGET
There's a lot of serious 'stuff' going on at Pompey at present following Convers Sports Initiatives (CSI) going in to administration and we mustn't lose sight of that.
Once again the Club is in the news for all the wrong reasons and in that broader context the Hatvent Calendar may seem completely out of place.
My intention is to lighten the mood as we approach Christmas and highlight the best of Pompey and our fantastic fans. It's all a bit of fun and goodness knows we could all do with some of that in these dark times.
